Never travel toward a storm, fire, flood or any emergency to earn a badge. This page is general safety information, not an alert. If you get a real alert, follow the instructions in it and from local officials.

What this alert means

A Tsunami Warning (TSW) from the NWS Tsunami Warning Centers means a dangerous tsunami is expected or occurring, with widespread flooding of coastal areas possible. Dangerous waves can keep arriving for hours.

Tsunamis are most often caused by large undersea earthquakes.

What to do if you get one

  • If you are in a tsunami hazard zone, move to high ground or as far inland as you can, right away. Go on foot if you can.
  • If you are at the coast and feel strong shaking, hear a loud ocean roar, or see the water pull back unusually far, leave immediately. Do not wait for an official warning.
  • Stay away from the coast until officials say it is safe. The first wave is often not the largest.

Summarized from the official guidance below. The alert itself and your local authorities always come first.

How the badge is earned

Your home area is in a coastal zone under a Tsunami Warning.

It happens automatically. The Badge Quest server reads the public FEMA IPAWS and National Weather Service alert feeds and awards the badge when an alert's official target area covers the home area you set (ZIP code or location). There's nothing to log or claim, and it can't be faked.

How rare is it?

EPIC ★★★★☆: the EPIC tier means 1 to 49 WEA messages a year nationally. ~3 WEA messages/yr nationally (2023-25 avg: 1 / 2 / 5).

WEA-flagged alert messages in FEMA's IPAWS archive (IPAWS archive filter: TSW). One message can cover a small area, so your personal odds are much lower.

How rarity is calculated

Upgrade: LEVIATHAN

LEVIATHAN

★★★★★ LEGENDARY

After 2 different qualifying alerts for your area, the game shows “Hold on... your BREAKER badge is upgrading!” and then “Your BREAKER badge was upgraded to a LEVIATHAN!”. Repeats of the same alert don't count twice.

“Two tsunami warnings. The sea sent its biggest monster and you were already on the hill. Twice.”

Upgraded badges rank one rarity tier above their base badge (capped at LEGENDARY). That tier is a game rule, not a separate statistic.
