Never travel toward a storm, fire, flood or any emergency to earn a badge. This page is general safety information, not an alert. If you get a real alert, follow the instructions in it and from local officials.

What this alert means

A National Alert (called a "Presidential Alert" until 2023) is the highest WEA category. Only the President, or someone the President designates, can send one, through FEMA. It is reserved for a national emergency, and phones in the U.S. cannot opt out of it.

No real National/Presidential Alert has ever been sent. The only times the system was used were the nationwide tests of October 3, 2018 and October 4, 2023.

What to do if you get one

  • Read the whole message and do exactly what it says.
  • Get more information from local TV or radio, NOAA Weather Radio, or official government websites and accounts.
  • Keep your phone charged and stay tuned for follow-up alerts.

Summarized from the official guidance below. The alert itself and your local authorities always come first.

How the badge is earned

An alert from the national level (event code EAN) that covers your area. Because a real one has never been sent, EAGLE is a bonus badge and is not needed to finish the game.

It happens automatically. The Badge Quest server reads the public FEMA IPAWS and National Weather Service alert feeds and awards the badge when an alert's official target area covers the home area you set (ZIP code or location). There's nothing to log or claim, and it can't be faked.

How rare is it?

LEGENDARY ★★★★★: the LEGENDARY tier means fewer than one a year, or never sent for real. No real Presidential Alert has ever been sent. Only two nationwide tests used it: Oct 3 2018 and Oct 4 2023.

WEA-flagged alert messages in FEMA's IPAWS archive (IPAWS archive filter: EAN). One message can cover a small area, so your personal odds are much lower.

How rarity is calculated

Upgrade: THUNDERBIRD

THUNDERBIRD

★★★★★ LEGENDARY

After 2 different qualifying alerts for your area, the game shows “Hold on... your EAGLE badge is upgrading!” and then “Your EAGLE badge was upgraded to a THUNDERBIRD!”. Repeats of the same alert don't count twice.

“TWO real Presidential Alerts?! The sky itself salutes you. Historians would like a word.”

Upgraded badges rank one rarity tier above their base badge (capped at LEGENDARY). That tier is a game rule, not a separate statistic.
