What this alert means

A Shelter in Place Warning (SPW) means officials want people to get inside and stay inside, usually because of a hazard in the outside air (such as a chemical release) or a dangerous situation nearby.

Sheltering in place keeps the hazard outside and you off the roads emergency crews need.

What to do if you get one

  • Go inside the nearest building right away, and bring pets with you.
  • Close and lock windows and doors. For an air hazard, turn off fans, air conditioning and heating that pull in outside air, and go to an interior room.
  • Keep listening to official sources, and stay inside until officials say it is safe.
