⚠ Do not seek out these events. They will find you.

Never travel toward a storm, fire, flood or any emergency to earn a badge. This page is general safety information, not an alert. If you get a real alert, follow the instructions in it and from local officials.

What this alert means

"Extreme" is the top level of Imminent Threat alerts: a threat to life or property that is happening now or is about to. Your phone may label it "Extreme alert" or "Emergency Alert".

MIDNIGHT is for the non-weather Extreme alerts sent by police, sheriffs, fire departments and emergency managers, for example a Law Enforcement Warning (LEW), Local Area Emergency (LAE), Civil Emergency Message (CEM) or Civil Danger Warning (CDW). Weather warnings earn their own badges.

What to do if you get one

  • Read the entire message. It should say what is happening, who sent it, and what to do.
  • Take the action it tells you to take (for example: evacuate, shelter in place, or avoid an area) right away.
  • Look for details from local officials, local news or the link in the alert. Call 911 only for an emergency, not for information.
  • Never travel toward the area named in the alert.

Summarized from the official guidance below. The alert itself and your local authorities always come first.

How the badge is earned

A non-weather Extreme Imminent Threat alert whose official target area covers your home area.

It happens automatically. The Badge Quest server reads the public FEMA IPAWS and National Weather Service alert feeds and awards the badge when an alert's official target area covers the home area you set (ZIP code or location). There's nothing to log or claim, and it can't be faked.

How rare is it?

UNCOMMON ★★☆☆☆: the UNCOMMON tier means 200 to 999 WEA messages a year nationally. ~558 WEA messages/yr nationally (2023-25 avg: 374 / 631 / 670).

WEA-flagged alert messages in FEMA's IPAWS archive (IPAWS archive filter: EXT_GEN). One message can cover a small area, so your personal odds are much lower.

How rarity is calculated

Upgrade: ECLIPSE

MIDNIGHT badgeECLIPSE, the upgraded MIDNIGHT badge: pixel art

ECLIPSE

★★★☆☆ RARE

After 10 different qualifying alerts for your area, the game shows “Hold on... your MIDNIGHT badge is upgrading!” and then “Your MIDNIGHT badge was upgraded to an ECLIPSE!”. Repeats of the same alert don't count twice.

“Ten extreme alerts. The sun went dark and you just checked your phone again.”

Upgraded badges rank one rarity tier above their base badge (capped at LEGENDARY). That tier is a game rule, not a separate statistic.
